How to choose and care for your scented candle

Scented candles are amongst the most popular home accessories on the planet – who hasn’t at some stage gifted – or been gifted – a scented candle!

And there’s plenty to love about them. They not only fill your space with beautiful fragrance, but can lift your spirits, enhance your mood, and also assist in various mindfulness rituals or meditations.

That said, we encourage you to check the ingredients lists and make sure you are burning a natural soy wax candle, which has been made using natural fragrance. Synthetic fragrance oils are an easy option for the candle maker – they are more stable and they have a reliable scent throw BUT they can often contain chemicals which have been known to trigger asthma attacks, migraines and negatively impact hormones.

And it’s not just the fragrance oil – steer clear of candles containing paraffin wax which can not only release chemicals into the air, but is also sourced from crude oil, a non-renewable resource which is most definitely not sustainable.

If you’ve read this far, you’re going to feel pretty good about a MELIS candle – ours are hand-poured from 100% natural soy wax, using 100% natural fragrance and imbued with loads of positive intent via crystals and meditation.

To get the longest possible life out of your MELIS candle, we have a few suggestions:

  1. On your first burn, leave it alight long enough to get a complete wax pool covering the entire surface of the candle. This could take 2 -3 hours. If you don’t do this, you risk the candle ‘tunnelling’, where a wall of wax forms around the perimeter of the candle and greatly reduces not just the life span of the candle but the throw of the scent. If this happens, don’t despair – just burn it a lot longer on your second burn to allow the candle to catch up.
  2.  Once you have put out the candle, use a match or tweezer to re-centre the wick while the wax is still soft.
  3. If you want to leave your candle burning for an extended period – over 3 hours – extinguish it after a couple of hours, trim the wick to 3-6mm and re-light it. This will avoid the black smoke and blackening of the candle vessel.
  4. Always trim the wick before relighting.
  5. Don’t hesitate to re-use your MELIS candle vessel! Just clean out the remaining wax by pouring in a little hot water into the vessel and wait for the wax to solidify before removing and scooping out the wick sticker. The vessels make great bathroom accessories for makeup accessories, makeup remover pads – or stick your devil’s ivy cuttings in one and wait for the roots to multiply!

MELIS candles will burn for around 60 hours if cared for as above.
